Day 14: 14.6 planned walking miles to Custer. The school history is background, not an invitation to visit the school or an announcement of its involvement.
Route overview, not turn-by-turn directions.

The planned 14.6-mile day ends in Custer. Its school history reaches from a district founded in 1891 to the building that joined the Ferndale district in 1941.
Custer is the next named destination after the Bellingham Awareness Day. The itinerary assigns 14.6 planned walking miles to this stage and then a shorter leg to Blaine. Together they carry the northern Washington section toward the Peace Arch crossing.
The local school provides a well-documented thread through Custer’s history. Ferndale School District records that Custer began as a separate school district in 1891. The present school building was constructed in 1936, expanded over the following years and became part of the Ferndale district in 1941. Later additions reflect its continuing place in the community.
Custer’s school history stretches from a separate rural district into the larger Ferndale system, with the building enlarged as the community’s needs changed. From here, the walk is planned to continue to Blaine and then cross into Canada.
Choose where you live
Continue to the official registry that serves you. It decides eligibility, handles registration and contacts you if you may match a patient.
United States — NMDP
NMDP accepts new registry members who are 18 to 35, live in the US, its territories or freely associated states, can meet NMDP’s health guidelines, and are not already registered through another US organization. Joining happens at home: you answer a few questions on NMDP’s site, they mail you a free cheek-swab kit, and you swab and send it back. Once you are a member you stay listed until you are 61 unless you ask to be removed — 61 is when NMDP takes you off, not an age at which you can join. NMDP makes the final eligibility decision.
