Guidelines for volunteering with our foundation

Thank You for Volunteering

We are grateful for your interest in volunteering with the Jada Bascom Foundation. Volunteers are essential to our mission of raising awareness about bone marrow donation and helping save lives.

These terms describe the expectations for volunteers and the nature of the volunteer relationship. By volunteering with us, you agree to these terms.

Volunteer Relationship

Volunteers are not employees of the Jada Bascom Foundation. Your participation as a volunteer is:

  • Voluntary: You choose to give your time freely without expectation of compensation
  • At-will: Either you or the Foundation may end the volunteer relationship at any time, for any reason
  • Not employment: Volunteering does not create an employment relationship, partnership, or agency

As a volunteer, you are not entitled to wages, benefits, unemployment compensation, or workers' compensation through our organization.

Volunteer Expectations

We ask all volunteers to:

  • Be reliable: If you commit to a volunteer activity, please follow through or let us know as soon as possible if your plans change
  • Represent us well: When volunteering, you represent the Jada Bascom Foundation; please conduct yourself professionally and respectfully
  • Stay within your role: Only perform activities you have been trained for and authorized to do
  • Protect confidentiality: Keep any personal information you may encounter (about donors, patients, or other volunteers) private
  • Follow instructions: Work with Foundation staff and follow their guidance during volunteer activities
  • Ask questions: If you are unsure about anything, please ask before acting

Code of Conduct

All volunteers are expected to maintain a positive, respectful environment. This means:

  • Treating all people with dignity and respect, regardless of their background
  • Avoiding discrimination, harassment, or bullying of any kind
  • Speaking truthfully about bone marrow donation (do not exaggerate or misrepresent the process)
  • Respecting the privacy and decisions of potential donors (never pressure anyone to register)
  • Refraining from using alcohol or drugs while volunteering
  • Following all applicable laws and Foundation policies

Foundation Rights

The Jada Bascom Foundation reserves the right to:

  • Accept or decline volunteers: Not all volunteer applications may be accepted based on current needs and fit
  • Assign or reassign roles: We may place volunteers in different roles based on skills and needs
  • Provide training: We may require training before certain volunteer activities
  • Supervise activities: Volunteer work may be supervised by Foundation staff or designated volunteers
  • End volunteer relationships: We may ask a volunteer to step down if their conduct is inconsistent with our values or these terms

Safety

Your safety matters to us. If you ever feel unsafe during a volunteer activity, please tell a Foundation staff member immediately. We will work together to address the situation.

Some volunteer activities (such as outdoor registration drives) may involve physical activity. Please let us know if you have any limitations or accommodations we should be aware of.

Photography and Media

We may take photos or videos at volunteer events for use in our outreach materials, website, and social media. By volunteering, you consent to being photographed or recorded for these purposes.

If you prefer not to be photographed, please let us know at the event and we will do our best to accommodate your preference.

Liability

Volunteers participate at their own risk. To the extent permitted by law, the Jada Bascom Foundation is not liable for injuries, losses, or damages that may occur during volunteer activities, except in cases of gross negligence or willful misconduct.

We carry general liability insurance, but this does not cover personal property or personal injury claims by volunteers.

Expense Reimbursement

Volunteers are generally not reimbursed for expenses incurred during volunteer activities. If pre-approved reimbursement is available for a specific event or activity, we will communicate this in advance.
