Day 39 is planned as 9.8 walking miles to the Potlatch area. The Great Bend marks a change in the route’s relationship with Hood Canal before the approach to Shelton.
State Parks places Potlatch at Hood Canal’s Great Bend. Its history describes a postwar increase in waterfront development and local concern about losing public access. The park was one response to that pressure, preserving shoreline for public recreation.
The official park brochure describes 5,700 feet of Hood Canal shore. Its longer reach of public waterfront follows the smaller shore at Triton Cove in this chapter. Both offer a view of how public parks became part of the canal’s developed coastline.
Day 39 comes after eight earlier Awareness Days and both ferry crossings. The planned 9.8-mile stage is followed by the Hood Canal Awareness Day, then the route turns toward Shelton and the South Sound.
