The planned 9.6-mile stage reaches Connaught Heights. Surveyed in 1859 and incorporated into New Westminster in 1965, the neighborhood has a long history of changing connections.
The ground later known as Connaught Heights was surveyed by the Royal Engineers in 1859 as District Lot 172. New Westminster’s historical chronology records the first home in 1910, railway rights of way and successive efforts to provide local services. The neighborhood’s administrative history developed over decades before it joined the city in 1965.
The chronology also records a waterworks district, street lighting and a regulated-area designation. These are the less visible parts of neighborhood history: the decisions that turn a subdivision into a place with shared services. Water and light became part of the neighborhood’s shared life through those successive local decisions.
