Day 43 is planned as 11.4 miles to Madrona Beach. Eld Inlet and its creek basin provide the setting for the final stop before the Capitol walking stage.
Madrona Beach is the itinerary’s last named destination before the Capitol. The planned stage is 11.4 walking miles from Kamilche, followed by 9.5 miles to the Legislative Building. An Olympia Awareness Day follows the Capitol stage.
Eld Inlet is connected to a much larger land area through McLane Creek and its tributaries. Thurston County’s basin study describes more than 7,000 acres draining through that system, with land use and water quality affecting the inlet. The shore is the visible edge of a watershed extending beyond it.
The word madrona is also one of the common names for Pacific madrone, Arbutus menziesii. A University of Washington plant account describes a coastal range from Vancouver Island to California and a preference for well-drained ground. The tree’s coastal range spans the island and mainland shores around which this route has been planned.
