The Super Highway Inside You

Explore how blood travels through your body like delivery trucks on a highway, and learn about the amazing factory inside your bones.

Learning Objective

Students will understand that blood travels through the body to deliver good things, and that bone marrow (the "factory") makes new blood.

Materials

  • Chart paper from Lesson 1
  • Red and blue crayons or markers
  • Optional: toy cars or blocks to demonstrate "highway"

Script / Talking Points

Review (2 min)

  • "Yesterday we learned about helpers. Who remembers our hidden helper?"
  • "That's right—blood! Today we're going to learn more about what blood does."

The Super Highway (5-7 min)

  • "Imagine there's a super highway inside your body. It goes everywhere—to your fingers, your toes, even to your brain!"
  • "On this highway, there are tiny delivery trucks. These trucks are your blood!"
  • "What do you think the blood trucks deliver?" (Accept all answers)
  • "Blood delivers good things like air (oxygen) and food (nutrients) to every part of your body."
  • "And guess what? Your heart is like a big pump that pushes all those trucks along the highway!"

The Factory Inside Your Bones (5 min)

  • "Here's something amazing: Where do you think new blood comes from?"
  • "There's a special factory inside your bones! It makes brand new blood every single day."
  • "Your bones might feel hard on the outside, but inside they're like a busy factory, always making new delivery trucks to send on the highway."
  • "Pretty cool, right?"

Closing (2-3 min)

  • Add "Heart" and "Factory (in bones)" to the "Body Helpers" chart
  • "Our bodies are amazing! They have their own highways, trucks, and factories!"

Activity: Blood Highway Drawing

Instructions:

  1. Give each student a paper with a simple body outline (or have them draw one)
  2. Have students draw a red "highway" going from the heart to different body parts
  3. Optional: Draw tiny "trucks" (circles or rectangles) on the highway
  4. Students can label their heart as "The Pump" and point to where the "factory" might be (inside bones)
Blood
The red liquid that flows through your body and keeps you healthy.
Heart
The special pump in your chest that pushes blood all around your body.
Factory
A place where things are made. Your bones have a factory that makes blood!
Healthy
When your body is working well and you feel good.

Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think blood needs to travel to every part of your body?
  • What would happen if the delivery trucks stopped moving?
  • Can you feel your heart pumping right now? Put your hand on your chest!

Optional Extension

Create a "Blood Highway" classroom activity: have students form a circle (the highway) and pass a red ball or beanbag around while one student in the middle acts as the "heart pump."
