Sharing the Gift of Health

Understand how some people need help from others to stay healthy, and how doctors can help share the gift of good health.

Learning Objective

Students will understand that sometimes people get sick and need help from others, and that healthy grown-ups can share something special to help sick people feel better.

Materials

  • Chart paper from previous lessons
  • Paper hearts or star stickers
  • Crayons or markers

Script / Talking Points

Review (2 min)

  • "We learned that blood is like delivery trucks on a highway inside us."
  • "And we learned there's a factory inside our bones that makes new blood."
  • "Today we're going to talk about what happens when someone needs help."

When the Factory Needs Help (5-7 min)

  • "Sometimes, a person's factory—the one inside their bones—doesn't work the way it should."
  • "Maybe their factory is a little broken, and it can't make enough healthy blood."
  • "When this happens, doctors can help! And you know what else can help? Other people!"
  • "How? By sharing."

Sharing Healthy Cells (5 min)

  • "Think about when you share something with a friend. How does it feel?"
  • "Healthy grown-ups can share something special from their bodies—tiny healthy cells—to help someone whose factory is broken."
  • "Doctors help make this sharing happen safely. They make sure everyone stays healthy."
  • "When someone shares, it can help the sick person's factory start working again. How wonderful is that?"

Closing (2-3 min)

  • "Sharing is one of the nicest things we can do."
  • "When grown-ups share their healthy cells, they become very special helpers—like superheroes!"
  • "Tomorrow we'll talk about how YOU can be a helper too, even though you're not old enough to share cells yet."

Activity: Sharing Hearts

Instructions:

  1. Give each student a paper heart
  2. Have students decorate their heart with colors and patterns
  3. Ask students to write or draw one way they can share or help someone this week
  4. Create a "Sharing Wall" where students can display their hearts

Emphasize that sharing comes in many forms—kindness, helping, and caring.

Share
To give part of something to someone else.
Sick
When your body is not feeling well or not working the way it should.
Doctor
A special helper who takes care of sick people and helps them get better.
Helper
Someone who does good things for other people.

Discussion Questions

  • How does it feel when someone helps you?
  • What are some ways you can share with others?
  • Why do you think people want to help strangers they've never met?

Optional Extension

Read a short, age-appropriate story about helping others (from your classroom library) and discuss how the characters showed kindness and sharing.
