Who Are the Helpers?

Discover the community helpers who keep us healthy and learn about a special "hidden helper" inside our bodies.

Learning Objective

Students will identify community helpers and understand that our bodies also have "helpers" (like blood) that keep us healthy.

Materials

  • Chart paper or whiteboard
  • Markers or crayons
  • Optional: Pictures of community helpers

Script / Talking Points

Opening (3 min)

  • "Today we're going to talk about helpers. Who can tell me what a helper is?"
  • "That's right! A helper is someone who does good things for other people."

Community Helpers Discussion (5-7 min)

  • "Let's think about helpers in our community. Who are some helpers you know?"
  • Write student responses on chart paper (firefighters, doctors, teachers, police officers, nurses, etc.)
  • "These helpers keep us safe and healthy. They do very important jobs!"

The Hidden Helper (5 min)

  • "Did you know you have a special helper that you can't see? It's inside your body right now!"
  • "This helper is called blood. Blood is the red liquid that moves all around inside you."
  • "Blood is like a tiny helper that carries good things to all parts of your body—your fingers, your toes, your brain!"

Closing (2-3 min)

  • "So we have helpers all around us—in our community and inside our bodies too!"
  • "Tomorrow we'll learn more about how blood helps us stay healthy."

Activity: Helper Chart

Instructions:

  1. Divide chart paper into two columns: "Community Helpers" and "Body Helpers"
  2. Have students draw or name helpers for the Community column (already done during discussion)
  3. Write "Blood" in the Body Helpers column
  4. Explain that we'll add more body helpers as we learn about them

Keep the chart visible for reference throughout the unit.

Helper
Someone who does good things for other people.
Healthy
When your body is working well and you feel good.
Doctor
A special helper who takes care of sick people and helps them get better.
Blood
The red liquid that flows through your body and keeps you healthy.

Discussion Questions

  • What is your favorite community helper? Why?
  • How do you think blood helps your body?
  • Can you think of other things inside your body that might be helpers?

Optional Extension

Have students draw a picture of themselves with their "hidden helper" (blood) drawn as red lines or squiggles inside their body. Display on a "Helpers" bulletin board.
