A second planned Awareness Day in Tsawwassen, and the one day in the new plan that may move. The day’s reading turns to how a donor search can cross borders.

Tuesday, September 29 is the fifth Awareness Day on the walk and the second in Tsawwassen. It is also the flexible day in the new plan: if Jeana takes the ferry that day instead, the spare day goes to Victoria. Either way, she plans to be in Victoria by Sunday, October 4.

Tsawwassen sits beside the international border that Jeana crossed on foot at the Peace Arch. The Tsawwassen First Nation’s own account of its traditional territory includes the Point Roberts peninsula, which the border crosses, leaving Point Roberts on the American side. Registries work on both sides of the line. In the United States people join through NMDP. In Canada outside Québec they join through Canadian Blood Services, and Québec residents are directed to Héma-Québec.

A patient’s search does not stop at a border either. Jada’s donor, Torsten Huber, had joined a registry at a donor drive in Germany; his marrow was used for her transplant in Washington. NMDP describes transplant teams searching relatives, unrelated donors and cord blood, and more potential donors give those teams more possibilities to consider.

Canada outside Québec — Canadian Blood Services

The Canadian Blood Services Stem Cell Registry asks for people aged 17 to 35 in good general health. You answer eligibility questions online, complete a profile and sign a consent form; a cheek-swab kit arrives in the mail within one to three weeks for you to swab and return. If you live in Québec, you register with Héma-Québec instead. Canadian Blood Services makes the final eligibility decision.
