A second planned Awareness Day in Tsawwassen, before the ferry to Swartz Bay. The day’s reading turns to how a donor search can cross borders.

Tuesday, September 29 is the fifth Awareness Day on the walk and the second in Tsawwassen. The next day Jeana takes the ferry to Vancouver Island, and she plans to be in Victoria by Sunday, October 4.

Tsawwassen sits beside the international border that Jeana crossed on foot at the Peace Arch. The Tsawwassen First Nation’s own account of its traditional territory includes the Point Roberts peninsula, which the border crosses, leaving Point Roberts on the American side. Registries work on both sides of the line. In the United States people join through NMDP. In Canada outside Québec they join through Canadian Blood Services, and Québec residents are directed to Héma-Québec.

A patient’s search does not stop at a border either. Jada’s donor, Torsten Huber, had joined a registry at a donor drive in Germany; his marrow was used for her transplant in Washington. NMDP describes transplant teams searching relatives, unrelated donors and cord blood, and more potential donors give those teams more possibilities to consider.

From the road

By bus to Delta City Hall in the rain, and a seed planted

It had rained all night long, and she was so grateful not to have spent the night in her tent. She began the morning over coffee and breakfast with Mary, who carefully wrote down instructions for riding the bus so that Jeana wouldn’t get lost.

She was able to leave her pack at Mary’s house. It was still raining when she set out, but she was well prepared for it, with her waterproof shoes, her rain gear and an umbrella provided by Mary. She took the bus to Delta City Hall.

The visit to Delta City Hall was rather anticlimactic. She was not able to meet with any of the Delta council members or anyone from the mayor’s office. She did meet a welcoming young woman at the reception desk, who took her information and promised to pass it on. When she got back to Mary’s she followed up by phone and was asked to wait for a return call. She did hope her request would land in the right hands.

She rested for most of the afternoon. Rest — what a marvellous gift.

I planted the seed. We’ll see what grows.

Canada outside Québec — Canadian Blood Services

The Canadian Blood Services Stem Cell Registry asks for people aged 17 to 35 in good general health. You answer eligibility questions online, complete a profile and sign a consent form; a cheek-swab kit arrives in the mail within one to three weeks for you to swab and return. If you live in Québec, you register with Héma-Québec instead. Canadian Blood Services makes the final eligibility decision.
