What does sponsoring a mile, a stop or a day pay for?

Sponsoring a mile, a day or a stop is a way of describing a gift to the Jada Bascom Foundation. It does not purchase anything on the route.

On the walk’s page, a gift can carry one of these names and a suggested amount, which you can change before you give. Whatever it is called, it supports the Foundation’s work wherever it is needed most.

Sponsor a mile
$100
Sponsor a stop

Sponsor a day

What does the Jada Bascom Foundation do with gifts?

Gifts support the Jada Bascom Foundation’s donor-awareness education, community outreach, drive planning and registry-referral tools. Its donation page names four ways a gift helps:

  • building registry-referral tools that connect people with official registries
  • planning registration drives with communities
  • creating educational materials about donation
  • outreach to underrepresented communities

The Jada Bascom Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 27-0699765, and donors receive a receipt for their records.

Is giving to JBF the same as joining a donor registry?

No. Joining a donor registry is separate from giving to JBF. The Jada Bascom Foundation is not a registry: it doesn’t sign people up, send swab kits, decide who can join or provide medical care. The official registry where you live handles registration, decides eligibility and contacts you if you may match a patient.

In the United States that registry is NMDP. In Canada it is Canadian Blood Services, except in Québec, where it is Héma-Québec. Anywhere else, find the registry for where you live.

Why did Jeana Moore walk?

Jeana Moore walked for her granddaughter, Jada Bascom, and for patients who need a blood stem cell donor. Jada was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia at one month old, and no one in her family was a match. At seven months she received a transplant from Torsten Huber, a donor in Germany who had joined DKMS at a donor drive in April 2006.

Jeana founded the Jada Bascom Foundation in 2009 and has walked thousands of miles across the United States and Europe to ask people to consider joining their country’s official registry. Read Jada and Torsten’s story.

Where and when was the Marrow Walk?

The Marrow Walk was Steps to Marrow 5. Jeana walked 314.8 miles around the Salish Sea from Seattle to Olympia, September 7–October 20, 2026. 7 of its 44 days were Bone Marrow Awareness Days, spent in one place talking with people about joining a registry.

Jeana completed the walk in Olympia on Oct 20, 2026. The route on this site follows her journal, day by day. First, a break. Then JBF plans to return to local college stem-cell and bone-marrow registration drives in Spokane, starting with Spokane Community College in early to mid-November. That is a planned timeframe; a date and location have not been confirmed.
