Can people in Angola join a registry abroad?

South Africa’s two registries take only people who live in South Africa: on Oct 11, 2026, DKMS Africa’s form asked first whether you live there, and SABMR excluded anyone not living there, so people in Angola can’t join either from home. 5 6

SABMR’s annual report for the year to March 31, 2025 said its Matches on the Map campaign would go next to Angola, with SABMR providing a translator and an extra team member to help recruit stem cell donors; we haven’t seen a date or how Angolans would be added. 7

Are stem cell transplants done in Angola?

Angola’s health minister told Angop in November 2025 that Angola wanted to end treatment abroad through its Junta Nacional de Saúde, was closing the board’s Portugal section and keeping South Africa’s for complex cases Angola can’t yet treat, Ver Angola reported. 13

Angola’s health minister said in February 2026 that the army’s general hospital, Hospital Geral do Exército General Pedro Maria Tonha “Pedalé”, already had a histocompatibility (tissue-typing) area and equipped operating rooms for transplants. The government said Angola’s public and private hospitals could do transplants only once both decrees were approved, Ver Angola reported. 15

Has Angola announced a registry or a law?

In July 2026 Angola’s Council of Ministers reviewed a presidential decree creating SECOSTRA, a service to coordinate and supervise transplants, and the health minister named the Instituto Hematológico Pediátrico in Luanda for bone marrow transplants, Ver Angola reported. 14

Ver Angola, citing Angop, reported in July 2026 that SECOSTRA stems from Angola’s Law No. 20/19 of Sept 20, 2019 on transplanting human cells, tissues and organs, and that health minister Sílvia Lutucuta said bone marrow donation would be possible between compatible people who meet its clinical and legal criteria. 14

Ver Angola reported in February 2026 that Angola’s health ministry had sent the government two draft decrees, one regulating the transplant law and one creating SECOSTRA, saying kidney and bone marrow transplants, the least complex kinds, could start in Angola that year and cut evacuations of patients abroad. 15
