Can people in Nicaragua join a registry abroad?

On Oct 16, 2026, none of the registries we checked took people living in Nicaragua: NMDP’s rule was U.S. residence, territories and freely associated states included; DKMS Chile asked donors to live in Chile; and the form of Colombia’s DarCélulas wanted an address in a Colombian department. 1 2 3

Are stem cell transplants done in Nicaragua?

A 2018 thesis on the site of Nicaragua’s Ministry of Health describes Managua’s Hospital Infantil Manuel de Jesús Rivera, La Mascota, as the national center for children with blood cancers; its hemato-oncology department diagnosed 599 leukemias from 2012 to 2017, 484 of them acute lymphoblastic and 72 acute myeloid. 12

Has Nicaragua announced a registry or a law?

Nicaragua’s Law 847 on the donation and transplantation of organs, tissues and cells, approved on Oct 9, 2013, makes the Ministry of Health its governing body and lets children and adolescents be bone marrow donors, as an exception, with their agreement and their parents’ consent. 11

Nicaragua’s transplant law, in force six months after its publication in La Gaceta on Oct 31, 2013, created the Nicaraguan Transplant Organization (ONITRA), whose director keeps the national transplant registry, a national donor registry and the national waiting list; we found no sign that it signs up volunteer marrow donors. 11

Nicaragua’s Law 847 of 2013 tells the system for obtaining organs, tissues and cells to give priority to children and adolescents who need a transplant, putting their interests first. 11
